Planned water supply maintenance for 20 to 26 July 2026

The City’s Water and Sanitation Directorate will conduct planned work in the identified areas, which may result in water supply disruptions. This critical maintenance work is being done on our water supply infrastructure to benefit customers. Residents in the affected areas are encouraged to take note of the work that will take place and prepare accordingly.

Maintenance work, including pipe and valve installations, repairs and replacements

Residents are advised to store enough water in advance as a precautionary measure. Water should be stored in clean, sealed containers. This precaution does not guarantee that all residents will experience a water disruption, but it aims to ensure they can prepare if one does occur.

Planned maintenance work will result in a water supply disruption to these areas:

Parts of Primrose Park

The City will temporarily shut off the water supply to Velocity Road (From Gani Road to Endeavour Street) in Primrose Park. An initial test shut off will take place on Tuesday, 21 July 2026 from 09:00 to 17:00 ahead of the actual shut-off on Thursday, 23 July 2026 from 09:00 until 17:00. The affected streets includes: Velocity Road, Gani Road, Comity Road, Fielies Way, Silicy Road and Endeavour Road. Residents and businesses in this area will experience no water during this period.

Parts of Cape Town CBD

The City will temporarily shut off the water supply to Jetty Street, Cape Town CBD on Tuesday, 21 July 2027 from 09:00 until 18:00 to install a new connection. The affected areas include the entire Jetty Street and Roggebaai Square. Residents in this area will experience low water pressure to no water during this period.

Parts of Bantry Bay

The City will temporarily shut off the water supply to parts of Bantry Bay to replace a fire hydrant. An initial test shut off will take place on Tuesday, 21 July 2026 from 09:00 until 14:00 ahead of the actual work, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday, 23 July 2026 from 10:00 until 18:00. The affected area includes Victoria Road from Florida Steps, 75 Victoria Road and the surrounding streets. Residents in this area will experience no water during this period.

Clarkes Estate and Adriaanse, Elsies River

The City will temporarily shut off the water supply to Clarkes Estate and Adriaanse in Elsies River on Thursday, 23 July 2026, from 09:00 to 18:00. This will allow a contractor to make new connections in Old Stellenbosch Road in Clarkes Estate, for a housing project. Residents in this area will experience no water during this period.

Wemmershoek Water Treatment Plant (WTP) Shutdown

The Wemmershoek WTP will be shut down for necessary maintenance. The two-day shutdown is scheduled for Thursday, 23 July 2026, from 00:01 until Friday, 24 July 2026, at 23:59. The areas that will be affected are parts of the Drakenstein and Stellenbosch Municipality, as well as private consumers along the Wemmershoek pipeline.

Voelvlei Pipeline shutdown of offtake pipes

The City will do acoustic leak detection testing on the Voëlvlei Bulk Water Pipeline as part of an ongoing condition assessment of this critical water supply asset. This test entails a device flowing through the pipe collecting information on leakage rates and locations.

To ensure the successful completion of this exercise, certain municipal and private offtake pipes must remain shut during the testing periods to ensure accurate and correct data capturing.

Two testing events are planned. The remaining initial section of the pipeline will be tested on Thursday, 23 July 2026 from 10:00 until 22:00. The final acoustic leak detection test will take place on Friday, 24 July 2026 from 10:00 to 19:00.

The temporary closure of offtakes during the above periods may affect parts of Hermon, Drakenstein, Klipheuwel, Durbanville, Fisantekraal, and Wellington, as well as private consumers supplied directly from the Voëlvlei Pipeline. During these periods, affected consumers may experience reduced water pressure or temporary interruptions to water supply.

Smart meter pre-installation survey (informative)

The City of Cape Town has appointed PPD Engineering and Hardware Supplies to carry out site surveys ahead of installing smart water meters. Teams will be visiting selected properties in Burgundy Estate, Claremont, Grassy Park, Hout Bay, Kenilworth, Lotus River, Marconi Beam, Milnerton, Montague Gardens, Muizenberg, Newlands, Panorama, Parow, Philippi, Rondebosch, Royal Ascot, Sand Industria, Scottsdene, Sunnydale, Table View, Van Riebeeckshof, Weltevreden Valley and Westlake from Monday, 20 July 2026, to Sunday, 26 July 2026, as part of this process.

This forms part of the City’s programme to modernise water metering and improve how water is managed across Cape Town. Residents are encouraged to cooperate with the survey team where possible. Your participation will help ensure a smooth rollout of smart water meters in your area.

What residents need to know about larger-scale planned water supply disruptions:

Careful consideration has been given to the planning of this work to ensure it is being done at a time that is least disruptive to the water supply.
All sites where water and sanitation repairs and upgrades are conducted are deemed to be construction sites and, as such, are off-limits to members of the public.
Sometimes the maintenance work can be more complex than anticipated, which means the work could take longer.
For a short period after the supply has been restored, the water may be discoloured or look milky. This is because of trapped air in the pipes. If left to stand in a glass, the appearance will become clear, like normal.

How residents are advised to prepare for planned water supply disruptions:

Store enough water in clean, sealed containers in advance for use during this period.
Keep your taps closed to prevent any water loss and/or damage when the water supply is restored.
